Gertrude Josephine (Winingham) Rains was born on November 6, 1938, in Versailles, Missouri to Shelby Clayton and Dorothy Leona (Blanks) Winingham. Jo grew up in the Versailles area before the family moved to Peru, Nebraska where she graduated from high school. Jo married Rex Rains and to this union four children were born. The couple operated a grocery store in Peru and then moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Jo later became a truck driver and she drove for 32 years. She drove for International Transport, United Van Lines, Heartland Express and Anderson Trucking Services. Jo retired in late 2000 from Anderson Trucking Service due to health problems.

Jo loved to visit over a cup of coffee. She also enjoyed fishing and she loved animals.

Jo died on Monday, May 20, 2013, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 74 years, six months and 14 days.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Debbie Winingham; and two brothers, Shelby Clayton "Buck" Winingham Jr., and James Newton "Buzzy" Winingham. She is survived by her four children, Bill (Anne) Rains of Omaha, NE, Darreld (Tammy) Rains of Atlantic, IA, Janet (Jim) VerWey of Spanaway, WA, and Cheryl (Jay) Mefferd of Dunlap, IA; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Lyle) Larsen of Decatur, NE; sister-in-law, Sylvia Winingham of Denver, CO; and many other relatives and friends.
