Venetian Military Leader. He came from a distinguished Venetian family and became the Captain of Famagusta when it was under Venetian control. From September 16, 1570 to August 1, 1571 Famagusta came under siege by the Turks. Marcantonio finally surrendered, but when he and his men came out from behind the city walls the order was given to begin slaughtering. Marcantonio had his ears and nose cut off and was then imprisoned for two weeks before being flayed alive. His skin was stuffed with straw and taken to Constantinople. His skin was later stolen by a fellow Venetian and it now rests in an urn on his monument.
