Seventh of 11 children born to Baron DeKalb Stansell b. November 23, 1833 and Caroline "Carrie" Jane Prichard b. March 18, 1837.

Paternal grandparents: David Stansell b. abt. 1796 and Priscilla Chastain b. abt. 1797.

Maternal grandparents: Joshua Prichard Jr. b. November 24, 1807 and Sarah "Sallie" Echols (Eccles) b. September 28, 1803.
