Son of Rev. Leonard Loveland and Elizabeth Eldrich.

Businessman. He was founder and president of Colorado Central Railroad, Denver Circle Railroad, and Colorado School of Mines. In 1863, he built the Loveland Block, which housed the first Colorado Territorial Capitol, and the Loveland Mercantile. It is now considered the oldest commercial building in Colorado. He was co-founder of Golden, CO and became part of the first Colorado Territorial legislature. The railroad he created between Cheyenne, WY and Denver helped establish many small towns throughout northern Colorado, of which Loveland was named after him.
