Suffragette. Born in Manchester, England, she was the eldest of Emmaline and Richard Pankhurst's four children. With her mother and sister, Sylvia, Christabel Pankhurst was one of the leaders of the women’s suffrage movement in Britain. In 1905 Christabel, and suffragette Annie Kenney, became the first women to be arrested in the suffrage movement. She was to be arrested twice more for her beliefs. In 1906, she obtained a law degree from the University of Manchester. After World War I, she was one of the first women to run as a candidate for Parliament, though she was defeated. She spent several years on the lecture and evangelical circuits in the United Kingdom and United States. In 1936 she was appointed a Dame Commander of the British Empire. She moved to the United States in 1939 where she largely withdrew from public life. She was found dead at home seated in her chair by her landlady February 1958.
