A native of Cospicua, Malta, Père Élisée de la Nativité was born Joseph Angelo Alford in 1900, and entered the novitiate of the Carmelite Discalced Fathers in Marche-en-Famenne, Belgium, in 1912. He soon became one of the pioneers in re-introducing his Order in France following its expulsion, seeing it adjusted with the modernity of the 1918 lifestyle. Elected Superior Provincial in 1945, he was asked to render his services through the Province of Brabant in 1963.

Authoring the biography of Father Louis de la Trinité who restored the Carmelite Discalced Province of Paris, several articles of his appeared in the "Annales brèves des Carmes Déchaux de France" between 1972 and his death in 1983, which occurred in Avon, France.
