World War II Soldier, Professional Hockey Player. A native of Eveleth, Minnesota, Sterle set an all-time record in 1941 while playing for the University of Illinois. Sterle scored 65 points beating the former National collegiate hockey scoring record of 48 points set by Vic Heyliger, who would later go onto play in the NHL. Sterle also played for the Kansas City Americans in the AHA from 1941 to 1942, and the Chicago Blackhawks for one month before he entered military service. Sterle was killed on November 19, 1943, while serving in Italy during World War II.
