Brother of Colonel Evelyn FitzGerald Michell Wood, CB, OBE, DSO (1869-1943), Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Herbert Wood (1877-1940), Anna Paulina Mary (Wood) Fanshawe (d. 1929), Marcella Caroline Mary (Wood) Blount (d. 1946), and Victoria Mary Eugenie (Wood) Balfour (d. 1961).

He was educated at Beaumont College and Royal Military College, Sandhurst.

Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers on 19 November 1892 and promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 15 May 1895. I 1898, he participated in the Khartoum Expedition and was mentioned in despatches, subsequently received the Queen's Sudan Medal (1896-1898). He then served in China from 1898 to 1900. On 17 February 1900, he was promoted to Captain. During the Second Boer War, he served as a adjutant of the 1st Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers and earned the Queen's South Africa Medal (1899-1902) with three clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and the Transvaal. From 1901 to 1904, he served as his father's aide-de-camp (ADC). Promoted to Major in 1910. In 1911, he received the Coronation Medal (King George V). During World War One, he was promoted to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel in 1915 and served as Temporary Assistant Adjutant General at the War Office. In 1916, he was invested a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour (France). He received the Great War Victory Medal with oak leaf (indicating further mention in despatches). In 1919, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

Wood's honours include investment as a Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG) and Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
