Faulkton July 23 Funeral services for Horace W Simpson, 97, the last Civil War Veteran were held here Saturday following his death on Friday.

Simpson, a Faulk County farmer since 1903, served in the 23rd Illinois under Generall U S Grant's command from his enlistment at Rockford Ill, February 4, 1864 until the end of the war.

Born April 8,1848 at Pecatonica IL, he came to Faulk County from Canton SD and engaged in farming until a few years before his death. After retiring, he lived with a daughter Miss Gertrude Simpson of Faulkton. Four daughters and two sons survive. Simpson a long time Republican voted in 19 presidential elections and a Memorial Day, 1944 statement expressed opposition to isolationism.

He said he felt the nation needed" another James Blaine and more shirt-sleeve diplomacy." Simpson's regiment was the second to enter Richmond VA after the lengthy siege of the confederate capitol.
