SALEM - Ed was born November 21, 1920 in Dickinson, North Dakota to Emmanuel and Barbara Fischer.

He was raised in Eastern Montana and worked the family farm raising sugar beets. He served with the US Army's 70th Infantry Division in World War II and the Korean War. He was a Drill Instructor at Camp Adair near Corvallis. He was then sent to Europe where he received a Field Commission to 1st Lieutenant, a purple heart, and a bronze star.

He was stationed in Tokyo most of his time during the Korean War. He married Fern Glover on May 10, 1946 and they had three children: Ronald, Sharon, and Michael. They lived in Salem. After Fern passed away he married Blossom Bates Woods on October 7, 2003. They also lived in Salem.

Ed was a general contractor and built hundreds of homes in the Salem area. He focused on entry level affordable housing for senior citizens and young families just starting out. He was active in both the State and local Home Builder's Associations and served as President for both at different times. He was also active with Salem Self-Help Housing.

Ed was a member at Salem First Baptist Church for over 50 years and served in many capacities there including the Sonshine School Board. He enjoyed reading his Bible and sharing with others how the Lord protected him and blessed him over the years. He was a very generous man and help many people during his lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern, and his daughter Sharon.
