PHILIPSBURG - Millard "Coley" Hancock, 84, of 431 S. Centre St., Philipsburg, former Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School principal, died Friday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at his home.
Born Nov. 8, 1901, in Runville, Centre County, he was the son of Edward R. and Catherine (Lucas) Hancock.
On Sept. 10, 1927, in Cumberland, Md., he married the former Gwendolyn Mabel Smutzinger, who survives along with three sons, Millard S. of Elmira, N.Y., James C. of Chevy Chase, Md., and Ronald E. of Bellefonte; six grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Cathleen Runk of Paxtang.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Hancock was a graduate of Philipsburg High School in 1920 and of Otterbein College of Westerville, Ohio.
He retired as principal of Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School in 1964. Mr. Hancock was also a former head football coach and athletic director as well as former head basketball coach. His 1927 basketball team played in the state playoffs. He was the organizer and first president of the Mountain Lake league, the oldest high school basketball league in the state.
He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Philipsburg and a life member of BPOE Lodge No. 1173 of Philipsburg.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the David K. Dahlgren Funeral Home, Philipsburg, with the rev. Neil Albright officiating. Interment will be in Philipsburg Cemetery.
Friends will be received in the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday until he time of the service.
The family suggests contributions be made to the Grace United Methodist Church of Philipsburg.
