"AGED SPARTANSBURG MAN DIED YESTERDAY - Gustave A Schmelzer, in His 80th Year, Passes Away at Home of Son in Oil City - Spartansburg, March 30 - The wide acquaintance in this village and vicinity of Gustave A Schmelzer were grieved to learn of his death which occurred at 9 o'clock this morning at the home of his son, Carl J Schmelzer, Hasson Heights, Oil City, where he had been visiting for the past two weeks. Mr Schmelzer was born in Germany and participated in the Franco-Prussian war, following which he came to America. He located in this village and for 37 years was a merchant here and took an active part in community affairs. At the time of his death he was treasurer of the Vocational School board and has served on the borough council. He was always ready with his money and his talent to work for anything that he knew was for the best interests of the town. Mr Schmelzer was always much interested in the best music and he contributed to the support of the musical organizations here and had a fine collection of good music. A short time ago he sold his property here to the Tauber Woolen Mills company and went to Oil City two weeks ago for a visit. Besides the son at whose home he died, he leaves his widow and one daughter, Mrs Sadie Schmelzer Westcott of Buffalo, NY. There are two grandsons, Harold Westcott of Buffalo and Walter Schmelzer of Oil City, and a brother, Frank Schmelzer of Erie. The body will be brought here for funeral services Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with Rev T P Kelly, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating, and the interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery."

"TRIBUTE PAID TO MEMORY OF AGED RESIDENT - Many Friends in Spartansburg and Vicinity Attend Funeral of Gust Schmelzer - SPARTANSBURG, April 2 - Funeral services in memory of Gust Schmelzer were held from the Baptist church, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev T P Kelly, pastor. A large assembly of business men, neighbors and friends gathered to pay their last respects to a man who will be much missed in the community where he resided for over fifty years and loyally worked for the welfare of the town. During his last years he was especially interested in the SVS and worked faithfully for its success, never taking any recompense for his efficient service. The body was brought here on the afternoon train from Oil City from the home of his son, Carl Schmelzer, where death called him. Rev Kelly read the beautiful poem by Alfred Tennyson, 'Crossing the Bar,' which seemed especially suited to the occasion, also several other choice selections, and expressed the sentiments of the community when he spoke of Mr Schmelzer being too big a man to need eulogy, as his life spoke for itself. Interment was made in the Rose Hill cemetery. Those from out of town in attendance included Mr and Mrs Carl Schmelzer, Mr and Mrs Walter Cross, Mr and Mrs Guy Bates, Mr and Mrs William Sipson, Mrs Harry L Thurston, Mrs Robert Putnam, Mr and Mrs Frank Baldwin of Oil City; Mrs Sadie Schmelzer Westcott and son, Harold, Buffalo, NY; Mr and Mrs George Smith and Mrs Adelle Smith of Union City."
