Lieutenant Lowell Smith is Victim of Aiplane Crash in Florida
The Oak Hill Press

A telegram from the war department to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith, of Oak Hill, Saturday afternoon brought the sad intelligence of the death of their son, 2nd Lt. Lowell Smith, 20, who was killed in a plane crash near Miami, FL at 7:30 that morning. Seven other members of the crew perished when the bomber crashed. The boy's mother had received a letter from her son that morning and among other things he stated that he would be busy for a week as they would be in the air most of the time in final training before going over seas. Lt Smith was a bombardier on the ship. Smith was a graduate of the Oak Hill High School in the class of 1942. His brother, Edward Smith, is believed to be on the way across.
Lt Smith graduated Sept. 2 from San Diego Army Air Field, Texas and spent a furlough here two weeks ago. He received his basic training in Miami University, Miami and Gainesville, Florida.
The body will arrive in Oak Hill Thursday night. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church at two o'clock with Rev. J D Law officiating. Burial will be made in the C M Cemetery in charge of funeral director Hughes.
