Came to California in 1875 at age 14 with his older brother. Worked as manager and ultimately President of the Joshua Hendy Iron Works. Was responsible for moving the factory to Sunnyvale, CA after the earthquake and fire of 1906 destroyed the San Francisco homes, offices and factories that the family had established. The business that John founded still operates today as Northrop Grumman Marine Systems Division in Sunnyvale.
