Of Indian heritage, 16-year-old Ernest died in a shooting accident during a family outing at the Auburn Indian camp. At the end of a day of squirrel hunting, his brother Allen, age 15, was unloading his rifle when it went off and hit Ernest, entering the boy's back and passing through the stomach before exiting the body. He died of his injury later that evening at the Highland General Hospital. He was the son of Cleveland and Frances (nee Burke) Adams of Watsonville.
