SOUTHERN PINES, NC ~ Patricia Hollingsworth Holshouser, 67, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at her home in Southern Pines.
Born Oct. 29, 1939, in Asheville to the late L.H. Hollingsworth and Bessie Walker Hollingsworth, she received her B.S. in home economics from Appalachian State University, an ADN in nursing from Caldwell Community College, and an MSN in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For many years, she lovingly and faithfully served as Patient Care Coordinator and as a hospice and palliative care nurse through Hospice of Scotland County. From 1973 to 1977 she served as First Lady of North Carolina, during which time she oversaw a major renovation of the Executive Mansion and served as chair of the N.C. Commission on Citizen Participation.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son who died at birth.
Mrs. Holshouser is survived by her husband, Jim Holshouser; her daughter, Ginny Mills and her husband, John, of Winston-Salem, who are currently serving as missionaries in Ocosingo, Mexico; her granddaughters, Holly and Maggie Mills; her sisters, Nancy Brown and her husband, Jim Amundson, of Raleigh, and Linda Simms and her husband, Tom, of Winston-Salem; her sister-in-law, Laura H. Mast; her nieces and nephews, Victor Brown, Deanna Butler, Jeff Simms, Amy Simms, Malinda Rathbone, Allen Mast, Amy Mast and Tim Mast, and a host of wonderful aunts, uncles, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Grady Perryman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Hospice of Scotland County, PO Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353, or First Presbyterian Church, Mills Family Mission/Medical Clinic, 326 S. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030.
