U.S. Congressman. During the Civil War, at the age of eleven, he enlisted in the 15th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, served as a drummer boy, was transferred to the 145th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry and served as the chief regimental clerk. After the war, he attended the Bedford Academy, Indiana University, entered the employment of the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Railway and moved to Leadville, Colorado, in 1880, There he became division superintendent of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and was Mayor of Leadville (1885-87). Moving to Denver in 1888, he became general sales agent for the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company, department and commander of the Grand Army of the Republic for Colorado and Wyoming (1891-92). He was an independent mining operator in 1893, senior vice commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic (1905-06), plus organized and commanded the Cook Drum Corps, of Denver. In 1907, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixtieth Congress, serving until 1909. Not a a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his mining operations until his death at age 65. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
