Zulu Wars Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Mulllaghbrack, Ireland, he served as a Captain in the 9th Queens Royal Lancers, British Army. During a retreat in actions on July 3, 1879, at Zululand, South Africa, Captain Beresford went to the assistance of a Sergeant whose horse had fallen and rolled on him. Many Zulu warriors were coming but Captain Beresford with the help of another trooper managed mount the injured man. He then with his carbine fought back the Zulus and, riding alongside held up the injured man until they reached safety. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on October 10, 1879. Remaining in the service, he was promoted Colonel in January, 1891 and was Military Secretary to the Viceroys of India, until 1894. He died of Peritonitis at age 53 in Surrey, England.
