Berthold Gotlieb "Bert " Stumberg, 89, of Atlanta, died February 18, 2013. He was born and raised in Tallassee, Alabama. Bert went to TMI at the age of 13. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was captured on Christmas day at the Battle of the Bulge; held prisoner in Germany, escaped twice before returning to U.S. forces on Easter day. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He eventually retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving in the reserves after the war. Recently he was taken on an Honor Flight from Alabama to Washington D.C. in recognition of his military career. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1949. Bert owned and ran his chemical business, SSC for over 30 years. He helped found Fellowship of Companies for Christ International. After selling his company, he continued to serve as Chairman of the Board of FCCI for many years. The one thing that Bert enjoyed most was spending time with his family at Lake Martin. He was a great man who touched many lives and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley A. Stumberg; children, B.G. Stumberg, III (Lynn), Zanne Crosland (John), Elizabeth Waits, Steve Stumberg (Linda); stepdaughter, Joy Williams (Warren); and 21 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Jim McCauley. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to FCCI (www.Christatwork.com) or to Children's Harbor (www.ChildrensHarbor.com). Funeral services will be Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 2 o'clock at Patterson's Arlington Chapel. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 until the time of service at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd, NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
