World War I Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award for his actions as a sergeant in Company M, 118th Infantry, 30th Division, US Army, on October 11, 1918, near Brancourt, France. He joined the Army following the US entry into World War I in April 1917 and was assigned to the Western Front where, on October 11, 1918 he courageously engaged the enemy that resulted in being awarded the Medal of Honor. Additionally, he received the British Distinguished Conduct Medal, the French Medalle Militaire and Croix de guerre (with palm), the Portuguese Medalha da Cruz de Guerra, and the Montenefro Medal for Bravery. Following his discharge, he returned to his native state where he died at the age of 33. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "While Sgt. Hilton's company was advancing through the village of Brancourt it was held up by intense enfilading fire from a machinegun. Discovering that this fire came from a machinegun nest among shell holes at the edge of the town, Sgt. Hilton, accompanied by a few other soldiers, but well in advance of them, pressed on toward this position, firing with his rifle until his ammunition was exhausted, and then with his pistol, killing 6 of the enemy and capturing 10. In the course of this daring exploit he received a wound from a bursting shell, which resulted in the loss of his arm."
