William J Callaghan, 58, of Carmichaels, died following a lengthy illness at 7 pm Saturday, February 5, 1977, in Uniontown Hospital. Prior to his retirement in 1976 he was general maintenance foreman at US Steel's Robena mine preparation plant. Mr Callaghan, a son of the late Otto L and Frances Carey Callaghan, was born September 22, 1918 in Buffington, Fayette County. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the US Army in the South Pacific. He served for seven years on the Carmichaels-Cumberland Joint Sewage Authority; had served one term on Carmichaels Borough Council, and had served on the Carmichaels-Cumberland-Rices Landing Joint Planning Commission. Mr. Callaghan was a member of St. Hugh's Catholic Church, Carmichaels; the US Steel Pensioneers Club; Waynesburg Lodge 757 BPO Elks; Cumberland Post 400 American Legion, Carmichaels; the Carmichaels Veterans of Foreign Wars post and the Greene Academy of Art. Surviving are his widow, Thelma Donley Callaghan, who has served as Carmichaels correspondent for the Observer-Reporter for 27 years; two daughters, Mrs. Norbert F (Linda) Braun, Mt Lebanon and Thelma Lee, wife of Lt Richard Ferris, Camarillo, Calif; five grandchildren; a brother, Otto L Callaghan, Pittsburgh, and a sister Marie A Currier, Carmichaels.
