Historian. The elder son of Sir Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West, Lionel Benedict Nicolson (who seldom used his first name) was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. During the Second World War, he served in the Intelligence Corps in Egypt, Palestine and Syria, and as an interpreter in the Italian Prisoner of War camps. From 1939 to 1947, he held the position of Deputy Surveyor of the King's Pictures; after his resignation from that post, he edited the Burlington Magazine. He was the author of six books, notably on Joseph Wright of Derby (1968) and Gustave Courbet (1973).
