NEWPORT — Carlton M Brackett, 94, the son of Ivory and Georgia Brackett passed away June 30 at a Maine Veterans Home. Carlton grew up in Newport, where he made many lifelong friends with whom he enjoyed summer activities on Lake Sebasticook, attended Newport schools and played regional baseball and basketball. He graduated from Newport High School and worked his way through the University of Maine-Orono, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. After graduating from UMO, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. Before being called to duty, he married his high school sweetheart, fellow University of Maine-Orono graduate Madeliene Banton, with whom he shared a loving marriage of 55 years until her passing. A first lieutenant, he served in the European Theater in England, Ireland and France. He participated in the Rhineland Campaign and was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Star, the American Theater Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following the war, he was stationed in Portland, Oregon, where he and Madeliene resided before taking a memorable cross-country drive to return to Maine. After completing his military service, Carlton was employed by the Veterans Administration Training Dept. in Maine and later was employed by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Farmers Home Administration. During his career with the FmHA, he received several promotions, retiring as Chief of Farm Programs after 36 years of service.
He was involved in many civic organizations, including the Sebasticook Valley Hospital Board, the Newport Water District, the Board of Trustees of the Peoples United Methodist Church Newport, and on a committee to oversee construction of a then new Newport High School on Elm Street. A star pitcher in high school, he was a loyal Red Sox fan.
He is predeceased by his wife Madeliene and his brother, Gerald Brackett, Sr.
He is survived by daughter Loy Leslie and her husband Mark of Monmouth; daughter Lyn of Northern Virginia; two grandsons, Richard Leslie of Lewiston and Darek Leslie of Salem, Mass; three great-granddaughters; Maddy, Mia, Alica, brother-in-law Richard Banton and his wife, B.J., of Freeport; a niece and nephews, including Gerald Brackett, Jr. of Georgia; and a cousin, Elva Alden Petring of Colorado.
