New Mexico Governor. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the 22nd Governor of the State of New Mexico from 1967 until 1971. After serving with the United States Army in Germany during the Korean War, he enrolled at the University of Michigan from where he attained his degree in Law. He launched his political career as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives in 1962 and during his governorship, Cargo prioritized efforts regarding environmental causes. His administration played a major role in the establishment of future legislation toward protecting the environment and tougher laws to combat pollution. He died of complications from a stroke. (bio by: C.S.)
