Bettie Arlene Stewart 88, of Belton Missouri, died Friday at her home following a long illness. Bettie was the youngest of seven children born to Bert and Stella Gerrish of Atchison Kansas. Bettie lived in Atchison and graduated from Atchison High school prior to her marriage to Raymond E. Wood also of Atchison. They lived both in Atchison and in Kansas City throughout their marriage. She married the love of her life Howard L. Stewart later in life and they were married for 22 years until his death in January 2000.
Bettie was a fun loving energetic woman who never met a stranger. She loved baseball and was a devoted Kansas City Royals fan. Bettie was very talented with needlework and embroidered a number of quilts and other items that will be cherished by her family. She worked for a number of years as an operator for Southwestern Bell. She then went to work as a grocery checker and worked for a variety of grocery stores in the area for the next thirty years. Upon retirement she went to work as a care companion for the elderly and was very proud of the fact that she worked right up until her health failed at age 83.
She was preceded in death by her son Steven Mark Wood and her step-daughter Mrs. Carol Sue Mitko.
She leaves a sister Mrs. Margaret Puckett of Bates City MO, her daughters Ms. Mary Elizabeth Wood of Belton MO., and Mrs. Marilyn Todd of Grain Valley MO, a step-son Mr. Bud Stewart of Lee's Summit, MO, and step-daughters Mrs. Janet Sweeting, Mrs. Donna Carril, Mrs. Peggy Wallace, and Mrs. Terri Petzel, as well as ten grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 30. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 1 at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO 64131. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Blessed Trinity Hospice, Inc., 1626 E Elm, Harrisonville, MO 64701-2055.
