World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Palasgaon, Village, India, he served as a Naik (Corporal) in the 5th Mahratta Light Infantry, Indian Army. At Tiber Valley, Italy, on July 10, 1944, Naik Ghadge commanded a rifle section which came under heavy machine-gun fire at close range which killed or wounded almost all members of the section. Without hesitation Naik Ghadge rushed the machine-gun position, first throwing a grenade which knocked out the machine-gun and then he shot one of the gun crew. Finally, having no time to change his magazine, he clubbed to death the two remaining members of the crew. He then fell mortally wounded, shot by an enemy sniper. For most prestigious gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on November 2, 1944. His body was recovered on October 25, 1945, and cremated in Arezzo, with the bodies of ten other Mahratta soldiers killed in action in the same area.
