Jay was one of the sixteen people from the Purdue University football team killed when the train they were riding to their rival game with Indiana University collided with another train on Oct. 31, 1903. As fate would have it, Jay had intended to go to Indianapolis on Friday evening instead of Saturday, and had purchased his ticket for that purpose. However, right before the train started he was notified he would be substituting for a regular player and therefore had to wait until Saturday and the fatal train.
His father, John Q. Hamilton, mother and younger brother mourn his loss, as well as his girlfriend, Miss Alma Patton of Marion. Jay was of Huntington, formerly of Nappanee, where his parents leased Hotel Coppes. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi.
