Revolutionary War Continental Militia Brigadier General. During the Revolutionary War he served as a Brigadier General in the New York Militia, and fought in the ill-fated 1775 invasion of Quebec, Canada. After the war, at the direction of President George Washington, he summoned the Canandaigua Council, which led to the signing, on November 11, 1794, of the Canandaigua Treaty, the final treaty between the six nations of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and the United States Government. The general died a few months after the signing of the treaty at age 54, and Seneca chief Red Jacket gave a moving condolence speech at his graveside.
