Mrs. Shepherd, 79, Marine General's Mother, Dies

Mrs. Emma Cartwright Shepherd, 79, mother of Maj. Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd, former commander of the Sixth Marine Division, died yesterday at her residence, 1229 Graydon Avenue, after a brief illness. She was the widow of Dr. L.C. Shepherd, former prominent Norfolk physician.
She was a native of Nantucket, Mass. and had lived in Norfolk for the past 55 years. She was a member of Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Irene Leach Memorial and the Norfolk Society of Arts. Mrs. Shepherd was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mrs. Agnes Hamilton Cartwright.
Besides General Shepherd, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James V. Brooke, of Norfolk and Mrs. George R. Ferguson, of Winchester, Mass.; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. C.W. Pitman, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mrs. J.W. Marion, of Kingston, Mass.; a brother, Archibald Cartwright, of Nantucket. Mass.; and two nieces.
The body was taken to the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments.
Funeral services will be held at Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church Wednesday at noon, with Rev. Moultrie Guerry, rector, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
General Shepherd, now on leave after a tour of duty in China, recently visited his mother in Norfolk.
