Farmer, miller, Metis leader. The son of Jean-Baptiste Riel, a french-canadian voyageur, and Marguerite Boucher, a Metis of French-Canadian and Chipeweyan ancestry, he was sent by his father to Berthier-en-Haut, Quebec where he baptized Sept. 23, 1822, to be educated.

He was trained as a wool carder, then returned to the Red River Settlement where he married Julie Lagimodiere.

He organized his community in defense of Pierre-Guillaume Sayer, charged with violating the Hudson's Bay Company's trade monopoly, leading to the first North West Métis rebellion of 1849.
