Caroline Bangs Smith was one of the children born to Knowles J. Bangs, Sr. and his first wife Abigail Clark.

Caroline was united in marriage to William A. Smith, the son of Reuben Smith and his wife Theodate (Data) Crowell, on March 27, 1853 in Freedom, Maine. Caroline and William were blessed with the birth of at least two children during their marriage:

Josephine A. Smith Manning
Frank (Francisco) E. Smith

Caroline was left a widow in 1885 when William took his own life by drowning. Caroline succumbed to cancer three years after William's death.
