Mary was a daughter of Peter Hitt and Elizabeth Otterbach who were original "1714 colonists" to Virginia's Germanna Colony. She was born in Germantown, Fauqier County, Virginia, which her parents had moved to from Germanna around 1719. She married Jacob Rector (1724-1810) in 1748. She was 25 and he was 24. She may have first married Jacob's brother Harmon. She died November 16, 1813 in Grayson County, Virginia and is buried there with her husband Jacob.

Jacob and Mary Ann (Hitt) Rector had at least 8 children, all of which were born in Fauquier County, Virginia:

1. Peter Rector (1749-1821) - He likely married a Hitt woman (~1749-?) and they had at least 8 children together. He died in Rowan County, North Carolina.

2. Nancy Rector (1752-1780) - She married John T. Williams (1752-?) and they had several children. She died in Fauquier County, Virginia.

3. James Rector (1754-1839) - He married Leannah Warren (1760-1809) and they had at least two children together. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was in the Battle of Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered in 1781. He migrated from Virginia to Rowan County, North Carolina. He then moved to Wayne County, Kentucky with his brother Jesse's son Samuel. From there, James moved his family to Lincoln County, Missouri which is where he died.

4. Jesse Rector (1759-1843) - He had 2 wives and 17 children. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, and fought in the Battle of Yorktown. He lived in Rowan County, North Carolina, then Grayson County, Virginia, and then moved to Lawrence County, Indiana in 1821. He died in Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana.

5. Susannah Rector (1762-1796) - She married Joseph Miller in 1791. It is not known if they had any children. She died in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri.

6. Mary Ann Rector (~1765-?) - Nothing is available about her.

7. Bennett Rector (1767-1845) - He married twice, had at least 6 children with his first wife Prudence Huff, and at least 7 children with his second wife Sarah Bryant. He died in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.

8. Elizabeth "Bettie" Rector (1769-1855) - She Married Jacob Hayes (1752-1837) and they had at least 6 children together. She died in Grayson County, Virginia.

===== Alternative Husband Issue - Joel Martin =======

Germanna Record, No. 1 has Mary Ann Hitt married to a "Joel Martin". Family historian Mrs. Smart claims this is a mistake, and has Jacob Rector marrying Mary Ann Hitt. She offers evidence that in his will, Peter Hitt beqeaths his daughter Mary RECTOR a hundred acres of land. In addition, she says that in 1798, "Jacob and Mary deeded land to their son, Bennet Rector, but they remained on the place as long as Jacob lived." There are a number of other references to deeds drawn on behalf of Jacob and Mary Rector, and she includes a copy of Jacob's 1810 will (probated in 1811). She also references Dr. Holtzclaw's efforts to clear up the accounts of Jacob Rector's children in his "Germanna Record No. 4".
