Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Inverness, Scotland, he served as a Colour Sergeant in the Royal Engineer Corps, British Army. During actions on April 19, 1855 at Sebastopol, Crimea, Colour Sergeant MacDonald engaged in dislodgement of the enemy's rifle-pits in front of the left advance of the attack. When the Engineer Corps officers were badly wounded, Colour Sergeant MacDonald took command of his position and determinedly held off the repeated attacks of the enemy. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross and later achieved the rank of Captain. He died at age 69 in Glasgow, Scotland.
