Elizabeth Cooper Capel was born in 1812 in Deddington, Oxfordshire, England. She married Joseph Capel on 4 Apr 1831 in St Mary's Church in Walthamstow, Essex. Together Elizabeth and Joseph had ten children, two that died in infancy. The family lived on Haggar Lane in Walthamstow until Joseph passed away in 1858. At this time Elizabeth moved most of the family to Wirtemberg Street just off Clapham Common. Here she worked as a laundress and needlewoman. The family also lived at 5 Alma Terrace near the Wandsworth Prison for a brief time, before moving back to Clapham. She passed away on December 14, 1885 at home at 109 Wirtemberg Street with her eldest daughter Elizabeth in attendance. She was 73 years of age. Burial records show she was buried in the South Metropolitan Cemetery on 18 Dec 1885. This cemetery is now called the Norwood Cemetery in Lambeth.
