World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Nepal, South Asia, he served as a Rifleman in the 1/5 Royal Gurkha Regiment, Frontier Forces, British Army. On November 10, 1944, at Monte San Bartolo, Italy, while leading a scouting patrol Rifleman Gurung came across German soldiers dug into the mountainside. The Germans started to open fire on his patrol and to cover the retreat of his section, Rifleman Gurung ran to the top of the hill and opened fire on the enemy position. He held the enemy in check until his patrol was well on its way to safety and as he was returning, he was shot and killed. For gallantry in covering his platoon's withdraw, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on February 22, 1945.
