She earned a reputation as a talented actress who brought Bertolt Brecht's works to life, especially in the roles of an older woman. During World War II, she traveled to Zurich, Switzerland to escape the Nazi-regime's agenda against the Jewish population. After the war, Giehse returned to Munich and the stage and remained active politically. She is fondly remembered in the role Mother Courage in Bertolt Brecht's stage 1941 play "Mother Courage and Her Children." She died in 1975 just three days before her 77th birthday.
