Auto Race Car Driver. Born in Columbia, Tennessee, he was one of America’s early pioneers in stock car racing. His career began by racing weekends at local Middle Tennessee race tracks. In the early 1960’s he won four track championships at Nashville’s Fairground Speedway, gaining the attention of the officials and sponsors of the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). He began his NASCAR racing career in 1968 and raced for the next twelve years. He started one hundred and sixty-five NASCAR races, finished in the top five nine times and celebrated over fifty top ten finishes. He became one of America’s most popular race car drivers and is recognized as one of the men who led the way in making stock car racing one of the nation’s most popular spectator sports. His son, Sterling Marlin, continues the family tradition by racing in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. He retired to his home in Columbia, Tennessee but remained active as an ambassador of auto racing until lung cancer claimed his life.
