Beam, Mary Ethel Boyd

MORGANTON - Mary Ethel Boyd Beam, 88, of Morganton passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Grace Hospital surrounded by her devoted family and pastor. She was faith, love and kindness personified. Born Dec. 11, 1916, in Clover, S.C., Mrs. Beam was the daughter of the late James and Mary Whisnant Boyd. Graduating from Lees-McRae College in 1939, she was a medical records librarian during and immediately following World War II. It was during this period, and while working at the old Charlotte Memorial Hospital, that Ethel met and married her husband of 52 years, Blanch Beam, who survives her. Ethel accompanied her husband to many cities and towns across North Carolina as he pursued his career with the N.C. Employment Security Commission, skillfully and indefatigably nurturing a family that grew to include three children and later four grandchildren as the years progressed. She loved the town of Morganton, to which she and her husband finally retired in 1994. Family, friends and the First Baptist Church were Ethel's three great joys in life. She gave selflessly to all three. Additionally, she was a major benefactor of her beloved alma mater, Lees-McRae College, and was its distinguished alumna and grand marshal of its homecoming parade in 2004. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Beam is survived by sons David and Olan Beam of Morganton and Winston-Salem, respectively; daughter Mary Alice Holland of Alpharetta, Ga.; sisters Louise Hinson of Greensboro and Margaret Boyd of Dayton, Ohio; and grandchildren Thomas and Peter Beam and Matthew and David Holland. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at First Baptist Church in Morganton with the Rev. Dr. Thomas A. Bland officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Sossoman Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Development Office, Lees-McRae College, P.O. Box 128, Banner Elk, NC 28604-9989. Sossoman Funeral Home of Morganton is in charge of arrangements.
