Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. A native of Scotland, he was gazetted with the award on December 24, 1858 for his actions as a gunner in the Bengal Artillery of the British Bengal Army in November 1857 at the Relief of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "Elected respectively, under the 13th clause of the Royal Warrant of 29 January 1856, by the Officers and non-commissioned officers generally, and by the private soldiers of each troop or battery, for conspicuous gallantry at the relief of Lucknow, from the 14th to 22 November 1857." He died at the age of 64. The location of his Victoria Cross medal is unknown.
