He graduated from School of Practical Science, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario.

Railroading became his career; he was bridge engineer in 1887 on the Chicago, Sante Fe and Calif Ry at Kansas City; division engineer in 1889 of the A T & S F Ry; assistant construction engineer of the Arizona and Southeastern Ry; division engineer of the Gulf, Colorado & S F Ry at Galveston, Texas, and in March, 1891, chief engineer of the Texas, Louisiana and Eastern Ry; superintendent of the same road in 1894 at the age of 30. Later he moved to Chicago in the Engineering Dept., of the C R I & P Ry"
