John McFarlin immigrated to America from Ireland in 1797 with his wife, Margery Anderson, and their six children: Isabel, Mary, Alexander, William, Andrew and James. John McFarlin was killed east of the Allegheny mountains, and his widow with her children visited her brother at New Bedford, Penn., for about one year, and then moved to Trumbull County, Ohio.
James was the youngest to be born in Ireland, which was about the year 1796.
In 1803/1804, the widow Margery McFarlin, with her four sons and two daughters, came to Coitsville, Ohio. James was either eight or nine years old then, and no doubt helped out on the family farm. Margery (Anderson) McFarlin appears to be buried in Hopewell Cemetery, New Bedford, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. If one looks at those Anderson's who are buried there, especially the oldest ones, one might find her brother's buried there, as well as their children and grandchildren and a few sister-in-laws, such as:

James McFarlin is said to have had one of four early distilleries in Coitsville, his older brother William having another. They "...pushed their business with energy for some years, consuming about twenty-four bushels of grain daily at least one hundred and fifty days out of the year, thirty-six hundred bushels per annum, and putting upon the market nine thousand gallons, more or less, of ardent spirits". James, the distiller, may be the person in his 1820 household, 'engaged in manufactures.'
James McFarlin married Melissa Hard about 1820 in Coitsville twp., Mahoning County, Ohio. They became the parents of nine children, six of whom arrived at maturity and had families of their own. Mary Jane McFarlin, b. abt. 1821; John Anderson McFarlin, b. abt. 1823; Louise Marie McFarlin, b. abt. 1826; Sarah McFarlin, b. 1833; Lysander McFarlin, b. abt. 1835; and Robert W. McFarlin, b. 1837. All of these children were born in Coitsville twp., Mahoning Co., Ohio. James McFarlin died June 11, 1838 in Coitsville twp., Mahoning Co. Ohio, and was buried in Hopewell Cemetery, New Bedford, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. His wife, Melissa (Hard) McFarland, died May 8, 1885 in Mercer County, Illinois. She was buried in Viola Cemetery. Memorial ID: 89103241. Her husband's Memorial ID: 42854337. Melissa (Hard) McFarland was the daughter of Rev. Lysander Hard. Some of her siblings were Almira, Orra Ann, Charity, Harlow and Lysander Hard, Jr.
