Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Union Navy as a First Class Fireman. His citation reads "Served on board the USS Richmond in the attack on Port Hudson, LA, 14 March 1863. Damaged by a 6-inch solid rifle hot which shattered the starboard safety-valve chamber and also damaged the port safety valve, the fireroom of the Richmond immediately became filled with steam to place it in an extremely critical condition. Acting courageously in this crisis, McClelland persisted in penetrating the steam-filled room in order to haul the hot fires of the furnaces and continued this gallant action until the gravity of the situation had lessened." He was originally buried in Lafayette Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but soon after burial he was reinterred to Mount Moriah Cemetery in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lafayette was closed down in 1956 and the bodies were reinterred to Evergreen Cemetery, Bensalem, Pennsylvania. In 1960 Evergreen Cemetery went bankrupt and was taken over. The cemetery's name was changed to Rosedale Cemetery.
