Meghan Denise Copeland, born July 17th, 1980, was taken from this earth on August 18th, 2013. Meghan was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Eula Mae Copeland and Uncles Richard and Jimmy Copeland and Aunts Brenda Petree and Ruby Tuttle. She was the daughter of David Copeland and Janetta Garrett. Meghan was a talented and gifted person, from an early age she displayed a remarkable musical talent. Her first instrument was the piano, and she became a very accomplished pianist. She won many local and state competitions with her solo pieces. She found an outlet in her music and as a child her parents were able to determine many things about her mood by her chosen pieces for afterschool practice. Meghan was also gifted with a wonderful voice which she later used to win numerous chorus and choir awards. Meghan's musical abilities were a blessing to all who knew her and she freely sang and played for family and friends. As an adult Meghan, taught herself to play acoustic guitar and became accomplished with another instrument. She had recently obtained a violin and was beginning to learn this instrument as well. Meghan was able to share her skills to others both as a teacher and a tutor. She was a great lover of all types of music. Meghan's school years were full of academic awards and honors. She was a regular on the honor roll throughout her elementary and secondary education. There were awards and honors for every year of her education. Her academic ability enabled her to participate on the academic team and become a winner in many academic bowls. She also participated in spelling competitions winning both the Tulsa World, and Tulsa Tribune awards. Meghan was active in 4-H club work and received several first place awards both in the Cherokee County and Tulsa State Fair competitions. Meghan spent time playing both basketball and softball during her youth, but her favorite outdoor activity throughout her life was swimming. Meghan was also a writer of poetry and essays. She had a great concern for the environment and social justice in this country. Meghan was a winner in the Starwatch XIV writer's contest of 1994 and has both a poem and essay published in the winner's anthology. Meghan had a hunger for knowledge and information, she was an avid reader of books of all types. Reading books up into the thousands each year, and she was always available for recommendation of a new title to read. Following high school Meghan attended Southwestern State University on an academic scholarship and later attended Northeastern State University. Meghan worked for Volunteers of America and Oklahoma Production Center. She was a houseparent and later a Habilitation Training Specialist. When Meghan worked with her last client she obtained permission from his family to bring him to her and other family member's homes for holiday celebrations or weekend get togethers, so that he could celebrate as part of a family. She was very proud of her work with the developmentally disabled and her performance evaluations. It was more than a job to her, she developed relationships with her clients and gave her heart to them. Meghan's caregiving nature was turned toward the needs of her grandmother during the past 4 or 5 years. Going to her grandmother's home at least 3 times a day to make sure she had her taken her medication and had her needs met. She was dedicated to her grandmother who will miss her immeasurably. Meghan loved her family and kept in constant contact with her immediate family. Phone calls, text messages and photos were all part of her day. Her special relationship was with her brother, as well as being a proud and caring aunt. Recently, Meghan became interested in photography. She enjoyed taking pictures of nature and her dog Simon. She had developed new skills with the addition of two new cameras and given time would no doubt have become outstanding as a photographer. Meghan became a child of God at an early age. Her sensitive nature was touched by the Holy Spirit and she was baptized at the age of 6 years. She enjoyed regular attendance in worship and church activities, attending summer Bible School and church camps. Meghan was a member of First Baptist Church of Hulbert, and later Norwood Lakeview Baptist Church where she served as the pianist, until she left for college. Knowing that she is now in the arms of God is a solace to her family. Meghan was a bearer of happiness to those who loved and knew her from the minute of her birth until the Lord took her to be with him.
