Gilbert Taylor
Birth: Apr. 12, 1914
Death: Aug. 23, 2013

Motion Picture Cinematographer. He will be best remembered for his efforts on the pictures "Dr. Strangelove" (1964) and "Star Wars" (1977). He began his lengthy association in the film industry at the age of fourteen, when he landed a position as an assistant cameraman and gradually worked his way up to director of photography. By World War II, Taylor was so highly-regarded that Winston Churchill requested him to film live action footage of nighttime raids over Germany. Taylor had a flair for both black-and-white and color features. In Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove", he brilliantly captured the highly-memorable scene of the "war room" between Peter Sellers and George C. Scott. Kubrick was so elated with Taylor's work that he had him contribute to his classic "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968). An equally impressed George Lucas employed Taylor to serve as director of photography for "Star Wars". (bio by: C.S.)
