Billy G. Townsend, 88, died at his home in Douglas on Saturday, August 24, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on June 7, 1925 in Holton, Kansas to John Sherman and Laura Maude (Hagar) Townsend. Billy attended grade school in Holton and graduated from Holton High School in 1943. He served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater from December 8, 1943 to January 23, 1946.

On August 15, 1946 Billy married his high school sweetheart Alberta M. Bowser in Holton, and together they moved to Douglas in December of 1946. Before starting work at the Douglas Post Office in 1958 he held numerous other jobs. He especially enjoyed his time with the geological survey and managing the Douglas High School Ag Farm. However, the time he spent working at the post office allowed him to send all four of his children to college.

He retired in 1986 after working at the post office for 28 years. Bill enjoyed his retirement to the fullest, spending time at his mountain cabin with Alberta and their family. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and cherished all of the time he spent with his family. He is remembered to have a kind and generous heart and for being the first to offer help to family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alberta of Douglas; his four children, Kathy (Dennis) Smith of Nemo, South Dakota, Mark (Tammy) Townsend, Anita (Rick) Hollon, and Linda (Ken) Grant all of Douglas; grandchildren, Erin Graves, Erik Smith, Lia Gant, Laura Joppru, Seth Townsend, Sarah Townsend, Heather Townsend, Lisa Townsend, Nathan Gross, Jessica McGuire, Riley Meyen, Dylan Grant; and 17 much loved great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, John S., on December 12, 1973; mother, Maude, on September 12, 1981; and his brother, John L., on December 28, 1982.
