Murder victim. Emily and her roommate, Janice Wylie were found murdered on the afternoon of August 28, 1963 by Patricia Tolles when she came home after work. The three young women had been sharing an apartment on East 88th Street in New York City. Hoffert was in the process of moving out to begin a position as a school teacher. She had spent the morning transferring her belongings to her new place on Long Island and returned to the apartment when she walked in on Ricky Robles who was in the process of robbing the unit. Robles who gained access to the apartment by breaking in through a service entrance had already tied up Wylie who had stayed home that morning. While Ricky Robles was tying up Emily, she made the mistake of telling him that he wouldn't get away with the crime as the two women had seen his face and could identify him. Robles panicked, went into the kitchen and returned with a broken soda bottle and a knife with which he proceeded to stab both over 60 times. Police initially charged George Whitmore with the murders and it was several years until the actual murderer, Ricky Robles was arrested, charged and sentenced for the crime. The case became known as 'The Career Girl Murders' and was the basis for a tv movie made 10 years later entitled The Marcus Nelson Murders which introduced the character of Lt. Kojak.
