British Royalty. Born at Middleham Castle, the only son of Richard III and his wife Anne Neville. In 1478, the title Earl of Salisbury was granted to Edward. In April 1483, Edward IV died and succeeded by his elder son as Edward V, but in June 1483, Edward V and all his siblings were declared illegitimate by Parliament. The late king's brother Richard ascended the throne as Richard III. Edward was invested as Prince of Wales at York Minster. Since contemporary records suggest the investiture was arranged hurriedly, it is thought possible that Edward was unable to travel to London for his parents' coronation because of illness. Edward died suddenly at Sheriff Hutton destroying all hope of an easy succession and prolonging the War of the Roses.
