English Egyptologist. He was born in Charlton (Kent) and died in Jerusalem. He excavated at many of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt such as Abydos and Amarna. From 1880 to 1883, Flinders studied and excavated The Great Pyramid of Giza. This started Flinders on his way to becoming known as one of the great innovators of scientific methods in excavation. In 1883 the book Pyramids and Temples of Gizeh was published to document his time at Giza. In 1923 he was knighted for services to British archaeology and Egyptology. Petrie left Egypt for Palestine in 1926. Here he excavated a series of frontier sites between Egypt and Canaan. In accordance with Petrie's wishes, his head was donated to The Royal College of Surgeons in London. His body is buried without his head, signified by the headstone and other stone being separate.
