Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, he served as a Private in the 42nd Regiment of Foot, British Army. In the actions at Maylah Ghaut, on January 15, 1859, a few men of the 42nd Regiment were skirmishing close with great numbers of the enemy. Some of the men were wounded by sword cuts, the only officer with the 42nd was carried to the rear, severely wounded and the Color Sergeant was killed. Private Millar with another soldier, went forward and directed the company until the fight was over. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 21, 1859. He died at age 57 in Glasgow, Scotland.
