Son of Francis Riley and Margaret Riley.

He served during WWI in France with the American Expeditionary Force. After the war, he worked for the International Banking Corp. in Tientsin, Shanghai, and Harbin, China.

He died of pneumonia as the result of a severe sunburn; was buried in the Catholic Union Cemetery in Harbin, China; and then disinterred to be returned to the United States. His brother William had his stone placed in June 1946.
